Journaling

Writing down your thoughts and feelings on a regular basis. It can help you process emotions, notice patterns, and get some distance from worries.

What is journaling?

Journaling can be free writing, answering a prompt, listing things you're grateful for, or tracking your mood and sleep. There's no right format. What matters is being honest, and doing it often enough to notice patterns.

Key things to know

In the 1980s, psychologist James Pennebaker asked people to write about a hard experience for 15 to 20 minutes on 3 or 4 days in a row. Many showed small gains in mood and health afterwards. The effects are modest. Writing can also feel worse before it feels better.

  • There's no right way. Free writing, prompts, and mood logs all count.
  • Expressive writing has research support, with modest effects.
  • Short and regular beats long and rare.
  • If it turns into going in circles, add structure.
  • Use it alongside therapy, not in place of it.

What helps

Keep it simple. Try 10 minutes at the same time each day. If writing pulls you into going over the same worry, switch to a set format, like what happened, what you felt, and what you need. Journaling supports therapy. It doesn't replace it.
