What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is your overall sense of your own worth. When it's low, it shows up as harsh self-talk, fear of failure, trouble accepting compliments, and always putting your needs last. Very high self-esteem that falls apart at the first criticism isn't healthy either. It's fragile.
Key things to know
It forms through early relationships, school, and life experiences, and it keeps changing in adulthood. Psychologists often measure it with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, a 10-item questionnaire from 1965. Low self-esteem is linked with depression and anxiety, though it isn't a diagnosis itself.
- Self-esteem is your overall sense of your own worth.
- Healthy self-esteem is stable and realistic, not always high.
- Low self-esteem is linked with depression and anxiety.
- It changes over your life and can be rebuilt.
- Self-compassion tends to help more than chasing confidence.
What helps
You can rebuild it, slowly. CBT helps you notice and question harsh beliefs about yourself. Doing things that match your values, keeping small promises to yourself, and spending time with people who treat you well all help. Self-compassion often does more than trying to feel great about yourself.
