What is racing thoughts?

Racing thoughts feel like your mind is running ahead of you. Ideas, worries, or memories pile up fast, and you can't settle on any one of them. They often get worse at night. That makes falling asleep hard, and the less you sleep, the faster they tend to run the next day.

Key things to know

They're common with anxiety and with ADHD. They can also be part of hypomania or mania in bipolar disorder, especially when they come with less need for sleep, fast speech, and unusually high energy. When thoughts jump so fast that speech is hard to follow, the DSM-5 calls it flight of ideas. If this goes on for days, with little sleep and high energy, get a professional assessment.

  • Thoughts move fast and jump between topics.
  • They're often worse at bedtime.
  • Anxiety and ADHD are common causes.
  • With little need for sleep and high energy, they can be a sign of mania.
  • Writing thoughts down can slow them enough to rest.

What helps

Spend 5 minutes before bed writing down what's on your mind. Slow breathing and a steady sleep routine help too. Grounding exercises bring your attention back to the present. If racing thoughts happen often or come with big mood shifts, see a psychiatrist.
