What is postpartum depression?
Lots of new parents get the baby blues. That's a few days of tears and mood changes in the first 2 weeks after birth, and it passes on its own. Postpartum depression is different. It's heavier, and it lasts longer. You might feel low, anxious, or guilty, struggle to bond with your baby, or feel like a bad parent.
Key things to know
It comes from a mix of hormone shifts, lost sleep, stress, and past mental health history. It isn't anyone's fault. Fathers and partners can get it too. Postpartum psychosis is rare, around 1 in 1,000 births, but it's an emergency. Signs include confusion, seeing or hearing things that aren't there, and very unusual beliefs.
- Baby blues fade within about 2 weeks. Postpartum depression doesn't.
- It can start in pregnancy or any time in the first year after birth.
- It isn't a sign you're a bad parent.
- Partners and fathers can develop it too.
- Confusion or hallucinations after birth need emergency care.
